What a Payday Loan Actually Costs in Kentucky
Kentucky caps the service fee on a deferred-deposit (payday) loan at $15 per $100 borrowed (KRS 286.9-100), plus a one-time $3 database fee. Here is what that looks like at common loan amounts:

These are the maximum amounts allowed by law – the fee actually charged, and whether a database fee applies, depends on the specific transaction. The $3 database fee is separate from the service fee shown above. Kentucky law also limits a customer to no more than two open deferred-deposit transactions at a time, with combined proceeds not exceeding the current cap.

Deferred-deposit (payday) lending in Kentucky is governed by KRS Chapter 286, Subtitle 9 and enforced by the Kentucky Department of Financial Institutions (DFI). As of 2026, following the passage of Senate Bill 219, the combined open-proceeds cap for deferred-deposit transactions is $600 (raised from the prior $500 limit), with an annual cost-of-living adjustment that cannot exceed $850. Pawn loans are separately governed by KRS Chapter 226, which caps pawnbroker interest at 2% per month and sets a 60-day redemption period.
